Direct time resolved observation of molecular dynamics induced by soft-x-ray photoionization

چکیده
We report the first direct observation of ultrafast dynamics in molecules induced by ionizing radiation. We use high harmonic upconversion process to generate soft-x-ray pulses of few femtoseconds duration, which photoionize N2 molecule. This leads to the formation of highly excited N2 ions via inner-shell ionization and electron shakeup processes. We time resolve the unexplored fragmentation dynamics of the electron shakeup states with femtosecond resolution using a strong-field IR probe. The IR pulse promotes the dissociating N2 wavepacket to repulsive N2 potential. We obtain kinetic energy release of N/N channel as function of time delay and observe a rapid transition from spherically-symmetric molecular potential to a two-center potential within ~150 fs.

Optimum driving a Z-pinch for soft X-Ray lasers
A capillary plasma z-pinch as an alternative active medium of soft X-Ray lasers was studied experimentally and theoretically. The theoretical analysis was based on the self consistent solution of the so called “snow plow” model. The dynamics of pinched plasma is determined by the capillary parameters and by the time dependence of electrical current passing through it. The current time dependenc...

At the new Free-electron LASer in Hamburg FLASH, we have studied photon-matter interaction by means of ion time-of-flight spectroscopy on gases in the soft X-ray regime. Emphasis was laid on the quantitative investigation of non-linear effects upon photoionization by the highly intense soft X-ray laser pulses. In the photon energy range from 38 to 93 eV, we have observed non-linearities due to ...

Photoionization is at the heart of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which gives access to important information on a sample's local chemical environment. Local and non-local electronic decay after photoionization-in which the refilling of core holes results in electron emission from either the initially ionized species or a neighbour, respectively-have been well studied. However, electro...
متن کاملTopical Review: Molecular reaction and solvation visualized by time-resolved X-ray solution scattering: Structure, dynamics, and their solvent dependence
Time-resolved X-ray solution scattering is sensitive to global molecular structure and can track the dynamics of chemical reactions. In this article, we review our recent studies on triiodide ion (I3 (-)) and molecular iodine (I2) in solution. For I3 (-), we elucidated the excitation wavelength-dependent photochemistry and the solvent-dependent ground-state structure. For I2, by combining time-...
متن کاملProperties of liquid silicon observed by time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy.
Time-resolved x-ray spectroscopy at the Si L edges is used to probe the electronic structure of an amorphous Si foil as it melts following absorption of an ultrafast laser pulse. Picosecond temporal resolution allows observation of the transient liquid phase before vaporization and before the liquid breaks up into droplets. The melting causes changes in the spectrum that match predictions of mo...
